How to Deal With Unprofessional Coworkers: Professional Versus Unprofessional Coworkers

Every work environment has professional coworkers, as well as those who are unprofessional in their speech, demeanor, comportment, attire, etc. Frustrations arise when professional and unprofessional coworkers have to work together. It is not easy for either of them. The professional worker has a high level of standards and expectations that the unprofessional coworker may not be able to understand or live up to.
The article, “Difficult employees” offers suggestions for “a worker who fails to conduct him or herself in a responsible, professional manner in the workplace.”

Dealing with unprofessional coworkers takes integrity, ingenuity and patience on the part of professional workers. Not everyone on any job site has experienced basic training as a professional worker. In fact, depending upon the kind of work environment one is in, the majority of coworkers may never have had professional training. Then, it is up to the professionally trained workers to lead or set an example for them.

Some unprofessional coworkers try to live up to the expectations of professionals because they can see the merit in doing so, though they are not trained professionals. They will follow the lead of professionals without questioning it, recognizing the fact that professionals know how to deal with day-to-day realities. These coworkers receive advances or promotions because they learn quickly, are open to listen and willing to change.

There are non-professional coworkers who always shun professionals for different reasons. They may be jealous of the training the professionals have received, as well as promotions that have come their way. There may be academic jealousies that surface, as well. They may want to do everything their own way. It is often their arrogance and refusal to change from an unprofessional to a more professional coworker that holds them back.

Attitude is everything, but anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort can advance his or her training, skills level, etc. Many unprofessional coworkers need academic upgrading to learn why professionalism in a work place is important.

Remember that every coworker wants care, concern and respect, regardless of his or her professional or unprofessional status. He or she wants compassion whether worthy of it or not.

Professionals dealing with unprofessional coworkers can enhance their own levels of professional development, by helping others to achieve and maintain a high level of professionalism in a work place environment. Setting a professional example for non-professionals is important.

Whether an unprofessional coworker chooses to follow the example of a professional is an individual choice that will affect his or her employment future. For example, professionals expect professional ethics. This may not be what an unprofessional coworker practices. He or she can change over time, if he or she understands the error of his or her ways and has the incentive to do so.

Integrity, ingenuity and patience can bring about proactive changes that make everyone’s work environment better.
